Mission purpose and context

Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost Mission 1 delivered ten NASA science and technology payloads to Mare Crisium under the Commercial Lunar Payload Services programme. The mission was designed to operate through one complete lunar daylight period.

Spacecraft and mission architecture

The lander carried instruments for subsurface, dust, navigation, radiation and geophysical investigations along with technology demonstrations. Its fixed surface platform supplied power, communications and pointing support for the payload suite.

Payload and measurement highlights

  • LuGRE demonstrated acquisition of Earth-based GNSS signals in the lunar environment.
  • LISTER investigated heat flow beneath the surface.
  • LMS measured the local lunar electromagnetic environment, while several payloads studied dust, regolith interaction and radiation-tolerant computing.
  • Laser-ranging and plume-surface interaction experiments supported future navigation and landing studies.

Flight and surface operations

Blue Ghost launched in January 2025, entered lunar orbit in February and landed successfully in Mare Crisium on 2 March 2025. It operated for roughly 14 Earth days through the planned lunar day and continued into sunset observations before its batteries depleted.

Mission sequence

  1. 15 January 2025: launched Firefly Aerospace's first Blue Ghost lunar lander mission.
  2. 2 March 2025: successfully landed in Mare Crisium carrying ten NASA science and technology payloads.
  3. Operated through its planned surface mission and returned data through local sunset.

Science and measurements

Payloads collected data on the local surface environment, subsurface properties and geophysical conditions. The mission also captured observations during a total lunar eclipse and documented sunset behaviour from the surface, giving the payload suite a broad range of illumination conditions.

What changed because of this mission

Blue Ghost demonstrated a complete commercial delivery and surface-operations campaign under CLPS. Its successful planned-duration operation provided a useful benchmark for commercial lunar payload hosting and mission management.
