Mission purpose and context

Chang'e 3 returned China to the lunar surface with a stationary lander and the Yutu rover. It was the first successful lunar soft landing since Luna 24 in 1976 and reopened sustained robotic surface exploration after a 37-year gap.

Spacecraft and mission architecture

The lander carried cameras and scientific instruments, including an ultraviolet telescope, while Yutu carried imaging, spectrometry and ground-penetrating radar. The rover communicated through the lander and was designed to traverse the surrounding Mare Imbrium terrain.

Flight and surface operations

Chang'e 3 landed in northern Mare Imbrium in December 2013. Yutu travelled across the surface before mobility problems limited movement, while the lander continued observations for a much longer period.

Mission sequence

  1. 1 December 2013: launched China's first lunar soft-landing mission.
  2. 14 December: landed in northern Mare Imbrium and deployed the Yutu rover.
  3. Yutu later suffered mobility limitations, while lander instruments continued operations beyond the initial rover traverse.

Science and measurements

The rover's ground-penetrating radar probed subsurface layering and instruments investigated local rocks and regolith. The landing site exposed relatively young mare basalt, adding in-situ context to orbital compositional maps.

What changed because of this mission

Chang'e 3 established China's soft-landing and rover capability and provided the engineering foundation for Chang'e 4's farside landing and later sample-return missions.

Mission outcome

It returned surface imaging, radar and astronomical observations and restarted lunar soft landing after a decades-long gap.

The outcome should be read against the mission's actual objectives and architecture. Multi-element missions can have different results for an orbiter, lander, rover or sample-return stage, while a shortened mission can still return important science or demonstrate a critical technology.
