Mission purpose and context

Chang'e 4 achieved the first soft landing on the lunar far side, a region that cannot communicate directly with Earth. The mission therefore combined surface exploration with a dedicated relay architecture.

Spacecraft and mission architecture

The Chang'e 4 lander and Yutu-2 rover operate in Von Kármán crater within the South Pole-Aitken Basin. Communications pass through the Queqiao relay spacecraft positioned where it can maintain links with both the farside mission and Earth.

Flight and surface operations

The spacecraft landed in January 2019. Yutu-2 traversed the local terrain over many lunar days, pausing during periods when power and thermal conditions required hibernation. Mission sequence

  1. 7 December 2018: launched for the first attempted farside soft landing.
  2. 3 January 2019: landed in Von Kármán crater within South Pole-Aitken Basin and deployed Yutu-2.
  3. Surface communications depended on the Queqiao relay because Earth is never directly visible from the site.

Science and measurements

Imaging, visible/near-infrared spectroscopy and ground-penetrating radar have investigated farside regolith, rocks and subsurface layering. The location inside the enormous South Pole-Aitken Basin gives the measurements special geological interest, although local observations cannot automatically be generalised to the entire basin.

What changed because of this mission

Chang'e 4 proved a complete farside surface-and-relay architecture and opened a previously unexplored lunar hemisphere to long-duration in-situ investigation.

Mission outcome

The mission explores far-side geology and requires relay communications because the landing site cannot directly see Earth.

The outcome should be read against the mission's actual objectives and architecture. Multi-element missions can have different results for an orbiter, lander, rover or sample-return stage, while a shortened mission can still return important science or demonstrate a critical technology.
