Mission purpose and context

Danuri, the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, is South Korea's first mission beyond Earth orbit. It combines lunar science with demonstrations of deep-space navigation, communications and mission operations.

Spacecraft and mission architecture

The orbiter carries Korean instruments and NASA's ShadowCam, a highly sensitive camera designed to image permanently shadowed polar terrain using faint scattered light rather than direct sunlight.

Flight and surface operations

Launched in August 2022, Danuri entered lunar orbit in December 2022. KARI extended operations through 2027, making the spacecraft part of the current lunar orbital fleet at the latest status verification used by Lunar Probe.

Mission sequence

  1. 4 August 2022: launched South Korea's first lunar mission on a ballistic lunar transfer.
  2. Entered lunar orbit in December 2022 after the long energy-efficient transfer.
  3. Continued science and technology operations in an extended mission, with current status tracked separately by Lunar Probe.

Science and measurements

Danuri maps terrain, magnetic properties and other surface characteristics. ShadowCam reveals morphology inside extremely dark polar regions that ordinary sunlit imaging cannot expose at comparable detail, helping scientists distinguish terrain shape from volatile interpretations.

What changed because of this mission

The mission gives South Korea operational experience in deep space and supplies complementary polar datasets useful to the international lunar exploration programme.

Mission outcome

It is mapping resources, terrain and magnetic properties while demonstrating deep-space communications and navigation capabilities.

The outcome should be read against the mission's actual objectives and architecture. Multi-element missions can have different results for an orbiter, lander, rover or sample-return stage, while a shortened mission can still return important science or demonstrate a critical technology.
