Earth-Moon Communication Delay Calculator

Radio and optical signals cannot travel faster than light. Change the Earth-Moon path length, message size and link rate to separate unavoidable propagation delay from the additional time required to transmit the data itself.

Propagation delay and transmission time are different

Propagation delay is the time the electromagnetic signal spends travelling through space. Transmission time is how long the transmitter needs to put all of the selected data onto the link. A 100-megabit file sent at 10 megabits per second takes 10 seconds to transmit even before the final bit completes its journey to the receiver.

Why lunar crews and robots cannot communicate instantly

NASA explains that space communications are bounded by the speed of light. This makes latency a physical constraint rather than a network problem that faster computers can remove. Mission operations must also account for signal processing, routing, coding, antenna geometry and the time a spacecraft needs to respond.

Distance changes

The Moon follows an elliptical orbit around Earth, so the path length is not fixed. You can change the distance field to investigate different geometries or shorter local links. The default 384,400 km is a convenient reference distance, not a claim that the Earth-Moon separation is always exactly that value.
