Why lunar seismic signals can persist
The Moon's dry, fractured interior attenuates seismic energy differently from Earth's crust. Some signals reverberate for much longer than familiar terrestrial earthquakes, which affects how scientists locate and interpret events.
Why this matters for exploration
Shallow fault-related moonquakes matter most for surface engineering because they can produce stronger local shaking than the more numerous deep tidal events. Site-specific risk still depends on fault location, event frequency, structure design and mission duration.
