Why mobility changed the science
A walking crew must preserve enough oxygen, cooling capacity and time to return safely to the lunar module. A rover expands reachable geology, carries tools and samples, and lets astronauts visit more stations, but it also introduces power, navigation, maintenance and rescue considerations.
Rover-era field geology
Apollo 15 introduced the Lunar Roving Vehicle and travelled about 27.9 km during surface traverses. Apollo 16 travelled about 26.9 km, while Apollo 17 reached roughly 35.7 km, the longest total driving distance of the Apollo lunar missions.
