Lunar Libration Explorer
The Moon keeps nearly the same hemisphere toward Earth, but its orbital and rotational geometry makes it appear to rock slightly. Move the controls to see which limb receives the better view.
Why libration happens
The Moon rotates at nearly uniform rate while moving faster and slower along its elliptical orbit. That mismatch produces libration in longitude. Its rotational axis is also tilted relative to the orbital plane, producing libration in latitude. Daily viewing position on Earth adds a smaller diurnal component.
What observers gain
Over time, libration lets Earth-based observers see roughly 59 percent of the lunar surface in total, although only about half is visible at one instant. Strong libration can improve views of features normally foreshortened near a limb.
Important limitation
This control is a conceptual explorer: you choose libration angles manually. It does not calculate the actual libration for a date. That avoids presenting a simplified phase algorithm as a precision ephemeris.
