Moon Observation Planner
Enter a date and observing location to estimate when the Moon rises, reaches its highest sampled altitude and sets. The planner then uses the lunar phase to suggest surface features that are likely to benefit from useful illumination.
How the timing estimate works
The browser calculates a low-precision geocentric lunar position from the selected time, converts it into right ascension and declination, then samples the Moon's altitude through the local civil day. Rise and set are estimated from horizon crossings; transit is represented by the highest sampled altitude.
This approach is suitable for planning an observing session, but it is not an occultation, eclipse or navigation ephemeris. Atmospheric refraction, lunar parallax, local horizon obstructions and the low-precision orbital model can shift the reported times. Near the horizon, allow extra margin.
How target recommendations work
The planner uses a curated observation-target dataset with broad lunar-age windows. These windows represent useful illumination ranges, not rigid rules. Libration, seeing, telescope aperture and personal interest can make a feature rewarding outside its suggested window.
