Moon Phase Explorer

Select a date to estimate the Moon's synodic age and illuminated fraction and render the corresponding phase. Use it to compare observing nights rather than treating phase as a decorative calendar icon.

How the calculation works

The browser uses a known new-Moon epoch and the mean synodic month of about 29.53059 days to estimate cycle age. Illumination follows the changing Sun-Moon geometry. This is a useful educational phase model, not a high-precision ephemeris for occultation or spacecraft navigation.

What phase tells an observer

Phase changes where the terminator crosses the visible disk. Near the terminator, low sunlight throws long shadows across crater rims, mountains and rilles. A high illuminated fraction makes the Moon bright but can reduce shadow contrast across much of the disk.

Limitations

The simple cycle model does not reproduce all perturbations in the Moon's orbit and does not calculate topocentric rise, set or libration. Those require fuller ephemeris calculations.
